City of Asylum Virtual Book Club: The Adventures of China Iron

City of Asylum Bookstore‘s April Book Club selection is The Adventures of China Iron by Gabriela Cabezón Cámara, translated from Spanish by Fiona Mackintosh.

This novel is a riotous romp that takes the reader from the turbulent frontier culture of the pampas deep into indigenous territories. It charts the adventures of Mrs. China Iron, Martín Fierro’s abandoned wife, in her travels across the pampas in a covered wagon with her new-found friend, soon to become lover, a Scottish woman named Liz. In a unique reformulation of history and literary tradition, Gabriela Cabezón Cámara, with humor and sophistication, re-writes Martín Fierro from a feminist, LGBT, postcolonial point of view. She creates a hilarious novel that is nevertheless incisive in its criticism of the way societies come into being, and the way they venerate mythical heroes.

The Book Club will be virtually discussing The Adventures of China Iron via Zoom on Thursday, April 22 from 6:00 to 7:00 pm.

If you are interested in attending City of Asylum’s Book Club, or if you need additional information, email volunteer book club coordinator, Laura McGaha, and reserve your copy of The Adventures of China Iron.
