Neu Kirche Contemporary Art Center presents Like a Body Without Skin, a new exhibition by mid-career New Zealand artist Fiona Amundsen. The exhibition will run through March 2016 in NK’s main gallery.
Fiona Amundsen is the inaugural recipient of NK’s BACH PGH Residency, a program that promotes New Zealand women in the contemporary arts. Amundsen is a senior Professor of Theory and Photography at AUT University School of Visual Arts (Auckland, New Zealand).
Amundsen’s academic background in social anthropology has influenced her thinking and approach to photographic representation and documentary practice. Present in Like a Body Without Skin is Amundsen’s inquiry into how Pittsburgh acknowledges its military histories, battles, and traumas. During the past two years Amundsen has focused this inquiry into an extensive research project that considers Pittsburgh’s steel manufacturing industries, particularly the site of Carrie Furnace, a former blast furnace in Rankin, Pittsburgh.
NK Executive Director, Lee Parker explains “We are thrilled to host Fiona’s first exhibition in the United States. After years of meticulous research, Fiona’s extraordinary work brings Pittsburgh’s industrial past firmly into the present. The exhibition will appeal to Pittsburgher’s young and old interested in exploring a complex history we all share.”
