11th Annual Jazz Poetry Concert

At City of Asylum’s Jazz Poetry Concert, you can count on hearing great jazz.  And great poetry. But this year marks a first, not just for the Jazz Poetry Concert, but anywhere – Three MacArthur “genius” artists will be in the same performance: Pianist Vijay Iyer (2013), and poets Heather McHugh (2009), and Terrance Hayes (2014).

Another first this year – Vijay Iyer and jazz legend Oliver Lake will be collaborating as a duo with the poets. These collaborations are the highlight of the evening and unique, created in Pittsburgh the Friday before the concert.

The Jazz Poetry Concert has received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts each year since 2009.  It has become both the signature event of the Northside and, in the words of the Allegheny City Central Association, “one of the most eagerly anticipated, widely admired, and culturally diverse literary events in Pittsburgh.”

The Jazz Poetry Concert will be held on Saturday, September 12 from 7:45 to 9:45 pm in Allegheny Commons West Park, near the National Aviary. The concert will take place under a tent, rain or shine. As always, the Jazz Poetry Concert is free to the public.
