As part of the Alphabet City Silenced Films Series, City of Asylum is presenting a free screening of The Blue Kite.
The Blue Kite, a political drama, is set in 1950s China, just after Chen Shujuan and her librarian husband, Lin Shaolong, have their first child, Tietou. The story is told from the Tietou’s perspective growing up in the 1950s and 1960s in Beijing.
The film was banned by the Chinese government upon its completion (along with a ten-year ban on filmmaking imposed on the Director, Tian Zhuangzhuang). The Blue Kite serves as one of the quintessential examples of China’s Fifth Generation filmmaking, and in particular reveals the impact the various political movements, including Anti-Rightist Movement and Cultural Revolution, had upon directors who grew up in the 1950s and 1960s.
