Irene Bauer Heads Welcome, Neighbor to Neighbor Program

“I’ve lived all over the world and I’ve never felt more welcomed than I have here,” says Irene Bauer.

Irene Bauer, a neighbor on Sherman Avenue, has taken the reins for Allegheny City Central Association’s Welcome, Neighbor to Neighbor program. Irene moved to Allegheny City Central about five years ago and was immediately struck by the sense of community here. “I’ve lived all over the world and I’ve never felt more welcomed than I have here.” Wanting to be a part of that welcoming community, Irene was inspired to volunteer for the Welcome, Neighbor to Neighbor program. “It feels good to volunteer and be a part of the growth of the neighborhood. It’s also a great way to get to know your neighbors.”

The Welcome, Neighbor to Neighbor program sends volunteers out to personally greet new residents and provide them with a welcome packet that includes orientation material, coupons from local businesses, and other goodies. Irene is looking for more volunteers to help greet new residents. “If we have enough volunteers, then they would only be called upon every month or two to do a greeting.” Greeters are sent out in pairs, so it’s a great way for a couple to get involved. It’s also a great way to get to know other volunteers. Those interested in volunteering can contact Irene at welcome@accapgh.org.

The Welcome, Neighbor to Neighbor program is always on the lookout for new residents to greet, whether they are homeowners or renters, but identifying new residents isn’t always easy. If you’re a new resident and would like a greeting, please fill out this form on the website. If you know of a new neighbor, encourage them to fill out the form, or you can fill out this form on the website.
