On May 6, 2015, the Historic Review Commission held their second River of Words hearing regarding the appeal filed by neighbor Glenn Olcerst. “The Historic Review Commission has again postponed a decision pending a revision of the design guidelines for the Mexican War Streets Historic District” says Olcerst.
The continuation of the public HRC hearing regarding the appeal filed by Glenn Olcerst on behalf of the neighborhood River of Words Art Installation is scheduled on Wednesday, May 6. Learn ways that you can show your support.
River of Words was the first of five temporary public art commissions being installed along City of Asylum/Pittsburgh’s Garden-to-Garden Artway in Allegheny City Central. The time period for the River of Words installation ends on December 27, but many people who have hosted words on their houses would like to make River of Words a more permanent installation and leave their words up after that date. HRC requires that anyone within the Mexican War Streets Historic District apply for approval to leave a word on the exterior of their house. Glenn Olcerst, a Mexican War Streets resident, has filed an application to keep his word displayed on his house. He hopes to set a precedent for others within the historic district, and is offering to do a class-action application on behalf of all residents wishing to keep their words. Please show your support for public art in general, or specifically to continue River of Words, by attending Mr. Olcerst’s hearing on February 4.
On Friday, July 25 from 6 until 8 pm, explore the installation, enjoy light refreshments and meet the artists behind the project at the River of Words Open House. Neighborhood maps will be available for pick-up at the Alphabet City™ Tent (318 Sampsonia Way) that will guide you to each word.
