Irene Bauer, a neighbor on Sherman Avenue, has taken the reins for Allegheny City Central Association’s Welcome, Neighbor to Neighbor program. The Welcome, Neighbor to Neighbor program sends volunteers out to personally greet new residents and provide them with a welcome packet that includes orientation material, coupons from local businesses, and other goodies. Allegheny General Hospital is considering installation of a large sign and additional lighting on top of its building on North Avenue. They will be installing several letters and design elements as a test phase on Monday and Tuesday of this week. River of Words was the first of five temporary public art commissions being installed along City of Asylum/Pittsburgh’s Garden-to-Garden Artway in Allegheny City Central. The time period for the River of Words installation ends on December 27, but many people who have hosted words on their houses would like to make River of Words a more permanent installation and leave their words up after that date. HRC requires that anyone within the Mexican War Streets Historic District apply for approval to leave a word on the exterior of their house. Glenn Olcerst, a Mexican War Streets resident, has filed an application to keep his word displayed on his house. He hopes to set a precedent for others within the historic district, and is offering to do a class-action application on behalf of all residents wishing to keep their words. Please show your support for public art in general, or specifically to continue River of Words, by attending Mr. Olcerst’s hearing on February 4.
Read more ...The URA Board will vote on Thursday to enter exclusive negotiations with TREK Development Group for properties in the Garden Theater Block. The properties include all of the buildings in the block except for the Garden Theater and the Masonic Building. TREK’s plans include mixed-use development with apartments, ground floor retail, and restaurant space.

Domenic Branduzzi, owner of Piccolo Forno in Lawrenceville, will no longer be opening a restaurant in the Garden Theater block. While this news is disappointing, there is greater optimism than ever that our commercial corridor will soon become a lively, economic bright spot. The City’s Urban Redevelopment Authority is poised to announce the selection of one or more experienced developers who will lead the thoroughfare’s revitalization at what is truly an economic high point for the neighborhood.
